Mary Eleanor Wilkins (1852-1930), who became Mary Wilkins Freeman after her marriage in 1902, is regarded as one of the best of the American writers of regional fiction and arguably the best of the New England writers (of which there were a remarkable number) of ghost stories. She was for many years private secretary to the physician, poet and writer Oliver Wendell Holmes. Her regional stories include several that hint at witchcraft, but the majority of her genuinely supernatural stories were written during the 1890s and early 1900s. Some are scattered through several books, but only one volume was entirely devoted to the ghost story, The Wind in the Rose Bush (1903). Her Collected Ghost Stories was published in 1974, but a complete volume has yet to be assembled.
